Echoing the call for increased awareness and celebration of First Nations Education, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is set to host a special event featuring the renowned "Echo" star, Alaqua Cox. The celebration, scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2024, will be a platform to honor achievements in First Nations Education at UW-Green Bay.
Alaqua Cox, known for her groundbreaking role as Maya Lopez/Echo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been breaking barriers in television since her debut in Disney+’s "Hawkeye" in 2021. Being the first major Indigenous character prominently featured in the Marvel franchise, Cox's presence at the event holds significant importance. Born and raised in the Menominee Nation community in Keshena, WI, Cox is a member of the Menominee and Mohican Nations.
The event will commence with special acknowledgments within First Nations Education at UW-Green Bay, followed by a moderated discussion with Alaqua Cox. Attendees can participate in person at the University Union, Phoenix Rooms, with limited availability, or virtually, with reservations required for both options.
The celebration aims to provide a platform for both the campus and the wider community to recognize and celebrate individuals and advancements in First Nations Education at UW-Green Bay. It will specifically honor Elders, graduates, students, and programs within First Nations Education, while also shedding light on plans for the future.
UW-Green Bay's Center for First Nations Education plays a crucial role in fostering relationships between students and tribal elders, as well as promoting a deeper understanding of American Indian history and culture. With resources focusing on First Nations Studies, the center houses a library stocked with materials on history, culture, sovereignty, law, worldview, and philosophy. The center also offers the unique resource of oral traditional Elder scholars in residence, aiding educators in delivering accurate and culturally competent instruction.
Sponsored by The Center for First Nations Education, Inclusive Excellence, and Intertribal Student Council, the event underscores the university's commitment to inclusivity and diversity. UW-Green Bay, known for its dedication to education that ignites growth and tackles challenges, serves a diverse student body and offers a wide range of academic degrees, programs, and certificates.
The upcoming celebration featuring Alaqua Cox promises to be a significant event in showcasing the importance of First Nations Education and honoring achievements in this field. For more information about the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and its initiatives, visit www.uwgb.edu.
